Nizwa Fort
Climb the giant round tower, dodge the murder holes, and see Oman's most famous fort.
What you'll do
Oman's most-visited fort is everything a castle-mad kid dreams of: a massive circular cannon tower, secret staircases, honey traps and 'murder holes' above the doorways, plus views over Nizwa's date palms and blue-domed souq.
The fort has good signage and small exhibits on Omani life; Friday goat-market mornings (very early) and the pottery souq next door round out the trip. Allow 1β2 hours for the fort itself.
It's about 1.5 hours from Muscat on a fast road β the classic first day trip, and it pairs perfectly with Wadina Water Park or Oman Across Ages Museum.
π Bring & wear
Water, hats and grippy shoes β the tower top is open to the sun.
π‘ Family tips
