Wadi Shab
Boat ride, canyon hike, turquoise pools and a secret waterfall cave β the ultimate adventure day.
What you'll do
Wadi Shab is the adventure day every family remembers: a one-rial boat crossing, then a 45-minute walk up a palm-filled canyon past plantations and cliffs to a chain of turquoise pools.
Strong swimmers can swim the final pools and slip through a crack in the rock into a hidden cave with a waterfall inside β the stuff of legend for teens. Younger kids are happy paddling the first pools and spotting fish.
The path is rocky but genuinely doable from around age 6 (or younger in a carrier). Start early, take real shoes, and budget the whole day with the drive.
π Bring & wear
Water shoes or trainers you can wet, swimwear worn under clothes, dry bag for phones, plenty of water, snacks, hats. Life jacket for weaker swimmers wanting the cave.
π‘ Family tips
- Leave Muscat by 7am β shade and parking both run out
- The cave swim needs 100m of confident swimming; there's a rope at the entrance crack
- Locals swim in shorts and shirts; keep swimwear modest
- Never enter the wadi if rain is forecast in the mountains
π» Facilities
- Free parking under the highway bridge
- Boat crossing at the entrance
- Basic toilets at the car park
- No food/water sold past the entrance β carry everything
