What you'll do

Wakan is a small mountain village at 2,000m in the Western Hajar, reached by a scenic drive through Wadi Mistal followed by a short, steep 4WD-only stretch. Once you're there, the main walk through the village is paved the whole way: about 700 steps up an ancient falaj-fed irrigation channel, through terraced gardens of pomegranate, apricot, orange and grapevine, ending at an old watchtower with views back down the valley.
Children manage the walk well one-way (it's the return climb that gets tiring), and there are shaded resting points and several viewpoints along the way. Mid-May to August is when the terraces are fruiting and at their most photogenic.
This is a working farming village, not a tourist attraction with facilities, so bring everything you need and treat the terraces and homes with the same respect you would show any neighbourhood.

πŸŽ’ Bring & wear

Closed, grippy shoes for the steps and falaj-side path; sun hats; water. A 4WD is needed for the last 2-3km of unpaved mountain track before the parking area β€” or take a lift from a local driver at the base.

πŸ’‘ Family tips

  • The final 2-3km of the access road is steep, unpaved and needs 4WD β€” locals at the base will drive up visitors without one, for a fee
  • The main terraced walk is paved and manageable for young children one-way, but involves many steps
  • Mid-May to August is when the pomegranate, apricot and grape terraces are fruiting and at their best
  • This is a lived-in farming village β€” stay on the marked path through the terraces and be considerate of residents

🚻 Facilities

  • Limited parking near the Wakan tourist information point β€” arrive early on weekends
  • No restrooms or food stalls in the village β€” bring your own supplies
  • Shaded rest points along the falaj walk
