What you'll do

Sama Wakan Heritage Lodge is a small group of restored traditional Wakan village houses, converted into nine simple guest rooms around stone courtyards, with a terrace restaurant looking straight across Wadi Mistal to the Western Hajar peaks.
It is the only accommodation in Wakan itself, so staying here turns the steep 4WD-only approach road and the long terraced walk into a two-day trip instead of a single exhausting there-and-back drive: arrive in the afternoon, walk the falaj-fed terraces at dawn before the heat builds, and avoid tackling the rough access track twice in one day.
Rooms are genuinely rustic β€” thick mud-brick walls, small windows, simple furniture β€” with modern air-conditioning, heating and en-suite bathrooms fitted in. Families should expect a heritage-village experience, not resort comfort.

πŸŽ’ Bring & wear

Warm layers for cool mountain nights, closed shoes for the terraced walk, cash (cards are unreliable this far up), a torch for the courtyard steps after dark.

πŸ’‘ Family tips

  • The final 2-3km access road is steep, unpaved and 4WD-only β€” the lodge can arrange a local driver up for a fee if you arrive in a normal car
  • Book a couple of days ahead by phone or email; this is a small, remote property, not an instant-confirm booking site
  • May-August brings the pomegranate and apricot terraces into fruit, the best time to combine a stay with the village walk
  • Rooms are simple and traditional by design β€” set expectations with kids before arrival

🚻 Facilities

  • Free parking at the lodge
  • Terrace restaurant (buffet and a la carte)
  • En-suite bathrooms with hot water and AC/heater
  • Family room with two interconnecting bedrooms
  • Mountain and wadi views from the terrace
