Wadi Dayqah Dam
Oman's biggest dam holds back a turquoise mountain lake β free viewpoints, a picnic park and a scenic drive through the gorge to reach it.
What you'll do
Wadi Dayqah Dam sits where two wadis meet in the Hajar Mountains near Quriyat, holding back a striking blue-green reservoir against a backdrop of bare, folded mountains. The drive in follows a dramatic gorge road, and the viewpoints just off the car park give an easy, safe look at the water and the dam wall without any climbing.
There is a landscaped park right by the dam with shelters and picnic tables, so it works well as a free half-day out: look at the view, let the kids run around the park, then head back. Husaak Adventures sometimes runs paid kayaking or pedal-boating sessions on the reservoir β worth checking their page if your children want to get on the water rather than just look at it.
It is a quiet, uncrowded alternative to the busier wadi stops further down the coast road, and a good stretch-the-legs stop if you are continuing on to Quriyat or the Sur coast road.
π Bring & wear
Water, hats and sun protection β there is little shade at the main viewpoint. Bring swimwear on spec if you want to ask about the kayaking operator.
π‘ Family tips
- The light is best, and it's coolest, in the couple of hours before sunset
- Stay behind the marked viewpoint barriers β there are steep drops down to the water
- Do not swim in the wadi below the dam without checking local conditions first β flash floods from rain in the mountains upstream can raise water levels with little warning
- The drive in through the gorge is scenic in its own right, even before you reach the dam
π» Facilities
- Free parking near the viewpoint
- Picnic shelters and restrooms in the adjoining park
- No food stalls on site β bring your own
