Muttrah Fort
Storm a real 16th-century Portuguese fort with the best harbour views in Muscat.
What you'll do
Built by the Portuguese in the 1580s, Muttrah Fort perches on a rocky ridge right above the corniche β three towers, cannon terraces and sweeping views over the harbour, the souq and the mountains.
It's a short, steep climb from the corniche (sturdy shoes for little legs), and once up top kids can peer through battlements and count the dhows below. Visits are short and sweet β half an hour to an hour.
Do it as part of a Muttrah afternoon: fort at golden hour, souq after, dinner on the corniche.
π Bring & wear
Water and proper shoes β the approach path is steep and there's little shade.
π‘ Family tips
- Go in the last two hours before sunset for cooler air and the best photos
- Hold hands on the upper terraces β the drops are real
- Combine with the souq, five minutes' walk along the corniche
π» Facilities
- Parking on the corniche below
- Toilets at the entrance
- Not stroller suitable β baby carrier recommended
