What you'll do

Barka's rebuilt fish market at Barka Marina is a genuine working market, not a show for tourists: fishing boats unload their catch and vendors auction tuna, sardines, squid and lobster in a fast, noisy trade that peaks between about 6 and 11am. It is a striking, sensory stop for older children in particular — loud, busy and full of things they don't see at home.
A short walk or drive away, Barka Fort (Husn Barka) is a compact coastal fort with crenellated walls and old cannons, easy for children to explore in 20-30 minutes, with views over the palm groves and sea from its walls.
Combine the two for an easy, inexpensive Batinah coast morning, and look out for the halwa shops nearby selling traditional Omani sweets.

🎒 Bring & wear

Cash for fort entry, closed shoes (the market floor is wet and fishy), and a camera — both the auction and the fort's cannons and battlements are photogenic.
