What you'll do

Al Ansab Wetland is an artificial wetland next to Haya Water's treatment plant in Al Khoud, where reed-fringed lakes attract more than 300 recorded species of resident and migrating birds β€” flamingos, herons, eagles and black-winged stilts among them. A visitor centre with a shaded terrace and a mounted telescope looks out over the main lake.
It is free, but every visit has to be booked into a fixed time slot online rather than turning up β€” a small extra step that keeps the reserve calm for both birds and visitors. Early morning slots are the best for bird activity and cooler weather, and winter (November–February) brings the biggest variety as migratory species arrive.
It is an easy, unusual outdoor outing for a Muscat morning: quiet, genuinely educational, and a nice change from the malls and beaches.

πŸŽ’ Bring & wear

Binoculars if you have them (a scope is set up on-site), closed shoes and sun hats β€” most of the walk is unshaded boardwalk and paths.

πŸ’‘ Family tips

  • Winter (Nov–Feb) is best for migratory birds β€” expect flamingos, eagles and wading birds
  • Book the first morning slot for the most bird activity and the coolest weather
  • Keep voices down and move slowly near the water so the birds don't scatter
  • Weekend slots fill up β€” book a few days ahead

🚻 Facilities

  • Free parking at the visitor centre
  • Restrooms and a small visitor centre with bird information
  • Shaded seating near the entrance
